Smith Statement upon Death of Ronald Reagan

NORMANDY, FRANCE - Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) issued the following statement on the death of former President Ronald Reagan from Normandy where he is participating in ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

"Ronald Reagan brought strength and confidence to America and freedom and liberty to millions around the world. President Reagan gave America optimism when we needed it most. He made America strong again. His passionate belief in free enterprise revived our spirits and our economy. At a time when we were doubting ourselves and our role in the world, Ronald Reagan restored our faith and brought down the Iron Curtain without firing a single shot.

"In President Reagan's eloquence, he captured the spirit of the American people as only Ronald Reagan could. He is a source of great personal inspiration and a political hero to me and many others. Sharon and I join all Oregonians in mourning his passing and celebrating his life."
