Smith Announces FTA Approval of Wilsonville to Beaverton Commuter Rail
FTA Approval Vital Step in Completing Rail Line
Washington, DC - Today, Senator Gordon Smith announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has approved the Wilsonville to Beaverton commuter rail project for entrance into Final Design.
"The Portland region has long been a national leader in smart transportation planning," Smith said. "Commuter rail will continue this trend by connecting with the Westside Light Rail system in Beaverton, Oregon."
The project is a 14.7 mile commuter rail line that will connect Wilsonville and other points in the alignment to the Westside Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) light rail line in Beaverton. The line will include five stations and will be serviced by seven passenger vehicles. The project, authorized in 2001, is estimated to cost $120 million, and has received financial commitments of $25 million from Washington County and $35 million from the State of Oregon. If the project meets its funding goals, service is expected to begin in September 2005.
"Clackamas and Washington Counties are experiencing the fastest population and economic growth in the Portland region," said Smith. "The commuter rail project will serve as an essential link to relieve traffic congestion and encourage healthy development."
The project has long been a high priority for Smith. He has been in constant and direct contact with top administration officials, including those from the FTA, the Office of Management and Budget, and the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of the commuter rail.
