Smith to Travel to Iraq and Afghanistan

Washington, DC – Next week, Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) will travel to Iraq and Afghanistan to meet with Oregon troops, review security forces, and discuss political developments with top leaders in those nations.

“Iraq and Afghanistan are at critical junctures, and Oregonians are on the front lines helping those nations stabilize and move forward,” Smith said. “I want to ensure the well-being of our troops and make sure they’re provided with the resources needed to accomplish their important mission.”

Before entering Iraq, Smith will tour the special forces training facility in Amman, Jordan and meet with Jordanian leaders. He will then travel to Kirkuk, Iraq where he will visit Oregon troops and meet with the commanding general of the multinational forces. Smith will then meet with the leading Shia political leader, Ibrahim al-Jafari to discuss the recent Iraqi elections, developing political situation, economic issues, and matters relating to the future of the Iraqi government.

In Kabul, Afghanistan, Smith will meet with Oregon troops and top officials of the Afghan government to discuss human rights, the illegal narcotics trade, and issues related to future peace and stability in Afghanistan. He will also review ongoing U.S. humanitarian projects in Afghanistan.
