Smith Resolution Condemns Anti-Semitic
Remarks by Malaysian Prime Minister
Senate and President Condemn Hateful, Inflammatory Speech
WASHINGTON, DC- Today, Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) announced the passage of legislation he introduced condemning the anti-Semitic sentiments expressed by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the out-going Prime Minister of Malaysia. In addition to vitriolic anti-Semitic comments, Mohamad moved to incite Muslims throughout the world to fight Jews. The remarks were made at the opening of the Organization of the Islamic Conference last Thursday.
"Prime Minister Mohamad expressed the most despicable of views toward people of the Jewish faith," said Smith. "These remarks are not only hateful, but directly undermine the goals of tolerance and understanding that the U.S. hopes its allies will promote."
In addition to repudiating the hateful rhetoric used by Mohamad, the resolution calls upon President Bush to condemn the Prime Minister's remarks when the two meet during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Bangkok this week. The resolution passed on Friday night enabling the President to further condemn the Prime Minister's inflammatory and hate-ridden statements telling him the remarks were "wrong and divisive."
